A duplicate preserves access
A duplicate adds another key to an existing key arrangement. For a vehicle with electronic starting authorization, cutting a blade may be only part of the job. Share the vehicle year, make and model and keep the working key available. See car key replacement and spare-key planning.
A rekey changes access
Rekeying alters a compatible cylinder so a different key operates it. It can be useful after a move or when an old key should stop working. Count the locks, tell us which keys currently fit each one and describe any existing hardware problems. Ask whether the intended locks can share a key; compatibility matters.
Rekey or replace?
A damaged or worn cylinder, a malfunctioning latch or a desire for different hardware may lead to replacement. A rekey does not fix every mechanical problem. Our rekey versus replacement guide explains the distinction. Call with your location and the required access changes for coverage, scheduling and an estimate.
Plan the keys and locks for the appointment
For a duplicate, keep a working original available and describe what it operates: an entrance door, a separate deadbolt, a padlock or a vehicle. Mention a bent, cracked or unreliable original before asking for a copy. If the key works only when lifted or wiggled, explain that symptom so the key and the lock can be considered together.
For a rekey, make a door-by-door list. Include the front entrance, back entrance, garage access door and any other cylinder whose access should change. Note which working key currently operates each lock. A knob and a separate deadbolt on one door can require two cylinder assessments; counting doors alone may leave part of the request out of the estimate.
Rekeying after a move or an access change
Explain whether your goal is to retire an old key, reduce the number of different keys you carry or provide an additional key to an authorized person. These goals affect the proposed work. Discuss worn hardware, a sticking latch or a door that needs to be pulled hard to lock before choosing rekeying alone.
Tenants, property managers and business contacts should prepare the owner or manager authorization needed for the requested work. For home entrances, see residential lock service. For employee keys or business entrances, use commercial locksmith planning.
Duplicate key and rekey questions
Can all of my existing locks use one key?
That depends on the installed cylinders and their compatibility. Describe the different locks and any markings you can read. Ask which cylinders can share the proposed key and which would need a different solution before agreeing to the work.
Does a copied car key always start the vehicle?
A blade that turns a lock is not necessarily a complete starting key. Tell us whether the original has a remote, electronic chip or push-button starting function. Vehicle details and the required functions determine the supported spare-key option.
What should the appointment estimate cover?
Confirm the number of keys or cylinders, any replacement hardware, vehicle electronic work if relevant and the mobile visit. Ask which original keys should continue working and which should stop operating the cylinders that are rekeyed. Check the agreed keys and doors after the work.
